In 2014, Pilgrims Ministries (Pilgrims Childcare Foundation) visited our village in Baruten LGA, Kwara State, and established a Nursery and Primary School. As a Fulani girl of 10 yrs, I was denied education by my parents due to cultural beliefs that prioritize early marriage over female education. However, I took the initiative to enroll myself in the school, and to my surprise, my parents didn’t object.
With the foundation’s support, I excelled in primary school and was later taken to Lagos for secondary education. Despite facing challenges and opposition from my parents, the foundation stood by me, advocating for my right to education. When I was about to be pulled out of school for marriage at 16, the foundation fought a spiritual, emotional, and legal battle on my behalf, ultimately securing my release back to school.
I successfully completed my WAEC and NECO exams and am now pursuing my dream career as a nurse or community health worker. I’m grateful for God’s goodness and the foundation’s tireless efforts and encouragement. My story is a testament to the power of education and the impact of supportive organizations in transforming lives.
– The importance of access to education, especially for girls in underserved communities
– The impact of cultural barriers on female education and the need for advocacy
– The role of supportive organizations in empowering individuals to achieve their goals
